Perham positivity group for young girls celebrates with 5k
“The best part of BIO Girls) is seeing the growth in the girls," Moch said. "From them walking so timidly into the first session and they’re nervous and that kind of mentality. Now, when they come, they come running in and they’re smiling from ear-to-ear, and the other girls are cheering each other on.”
Both Moch and Hanson feel like BIO Girls is a little too good to be true sometimes. Hanson said to cheer these girls on, support them and ask them about the lessons they learned about in BIO Girls.
Cousins who 5K together stay together
Running a 5K is a pretty big accomplishment. It takes training and dedication.
This week, a group of young girls completed their first 5K. They spent 12 weeks preparing as part of the BIO Girls program.
BIO Girls is short for “Beautiful Inside and Out.” The group is for adolescent girls, designed to boost self-esteem and empower girls.
The group also creates new friendships and strengthens old ones.

BIO Girls Announces Teen Program
BIO Girls is excited to announce the BIO Girls Teen Program! In this program for middle and high school girls, we will cover body image, mental health, relationships, and self-confidence. Our first four sessions will be on Body Image, to be piloted in Fargo in July 2022.

Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental wellness is one of four pillars the BIO Girls program is rooted in. BIO stands for Beautiful Inside and Out. That is exactly what BIO Girls is teaching it’s participants they are: Beautiful Inside, and Out.
Mental Health Awareness Month with Pediatrician Dr. Becca Bakke
Dr. Bakke has been a board-certified pediatrician for 11 years. She’s currently working at Sanford Health. She is a wife and mother to four kids including two BIO Girls. This episode covers important information that parents should know about mental health and their children including the prevalence of mental illness and some possible strategies for preventing or helping cope with mental health problems.
Missy Heilman is Keynote Speaker at 2022 UND Women for Philanthropy Event
The Women for Philanthropy Luncheon is a premier networking opportunity for female leaders and philanthropists to gather, either in-person or virtually, to embrace their passion for giving back. Every year, the UND Alumni Association & Foundation hand-selects nonprofit leaders and philanthropists to teach us tangible ways of making a difference in our community. Missy Heilman, UND '01, Founder and Executive Director of BIO Girls, will keynote the 2022 event.
Mental Health Awareness Month with Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Christina Smestad-Schmaltz
Christina is a licensed marriage and family therapist at the Village Family Service Center in Moorhead, MN. She provides individuals, couples, and family therapy for people of all ages who are struggling with a wide variety of challenges.
Mental Health Awareness Month with Licensed Clinical Therapist Dr. Kathryn Gordon
Dr. Gordon is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy. She’s also the author of “The Suicidal Thoughts Workbook: CBT skills to reduce emotional pain, increase hope, and prevent suicide.” This episode covers suicide.
