What If | A BIO Girls Blog Series Part 1
“What if” is a common question we ask ourselves at BIO Girls. It’s a question that fuels our vision, our mission, our future and the impact our organization is having on adolescent girls throughout the Midwest. Follow along on this blog series that illustrates the past 9 years of BIO Girls and where we are going from here.

6 in 10 adolescent girls battle low self-esteem, reporting they feel unhappy and unsatisfied with themselves most of the time.
When self-esteem is low, girls give up the things they love, avoid failure, seek external validation, embody perfectionistic tendencies and often find themselves depressed and anxious. These tendencies lead to a 75% chance of engaging in destructive behaviors such as:
Substance Abuse
Eating Disorders
Promiscuity
Poor Academic Performance
Self-Harm or Suicide.
This is why BIO Girls exists.
Girls with high self-esteem not only avoid destructive behaviors like those listed above, but they also flourish throughout their adolescent years. Girls with high self-esteem:
Make Value-Driven Decisions
Perform Better Academically
Have Confidence to Fail
Create Healthy Relationships
Avoid Risky Behavior
Proven to significantly increase self-esteem, BIO Girls empowers girls to believe in their unique purpose while increasing their confidence and sense of belonging.
The BIO Girls 12-week program is evidence-based and research-backed. Extensive research has shown 63% of BIO Girls participants experienced a significant increase in self-esteem and positive changes in emotional and physical well-being. Each girl leaving the BIO Girls program with a healthier self-esteem is poised to break the pattern of depression, isolation, and perfectionism that is plaguing girls in our communities.
BIO Girls is reaching 2,000 girls annually across the Midwest region. 1 in every 25 North Dakota girls participates in BIO Girls each year.
