BIO Girls Volunteer in Traverse County
With over 5 years under her belt as a BIO Girls Volunteer, we can’t thank this change-maker enough for all she’s done for the adolescent girls in Traverse County! When asked her ‘why’ to BIO Girls, we can’t help but be so grateful for her commitment to our mission.
“I volunteer because I love to witness the strength and achievement from the young girls in our community in this positive and supportive setting.”
When it comes to her favorite lesson - Self-Worth. Why? Emily loves being able to discuss that her BIO Girls’ worth is not based off of material things. She recalls such meaningful conversations with her group explaining they are worth so much more than the house they live in, the vehicle their parents drive or the shoes on their feet.
Another favorite component for Emily is the running! As someone who didn’t enjoy running until she was an adult, she loves witnessing these young girls try something new and accomplish a 5K!
Both of Emily’s daughters (one pictured) have participated in BIO Girls with her creating an extremely special experience for the family as a whole. But the special experience extends beyond her family and into the community.
“I live in a small community so I see past participants often. I enjoy when I see them months or years later and we can discuss and remind ourselves how the lessons we went through are still important messages in our lives today.”
Life skills lessons to last a lifetime brought to you by positive mentors. This is BIO Girls and Emily Shay is a true testament of impact in action.
